Description

In this exciting 10-week course, students will explore the many ways Italians communicate in everyday life, from phone calls and social media to indirect speech and authentic media. You will learn to adapt your Italian to different communication settings, explain ideas clearly, report what others have said, and navigate conversations with confidence and naturalness.

Italian 404 is designed for students who have completed Italian 403 or have an equivalent level of advanced Italian. If you are unsure whether this course is the right fit for you, we encourage you to take our Placement Test before registering.

What You’ll Learn:

• Communicating with Confidence: Learn to adapt your language appropriately to different means of communication, give clear explanations, start and manage telephone conversations, ask to speak with someone, and understand common expressions used in different communication settings
• Reporting What Others Say: Master the indirect discourse (il discorso indiretto) to accurately report what someone else has said, including the use of andare and venire when transforming direct speech into indirect speech
• Grammar in Context: Strengthen your command of the imperfect subjunctive and learn to use come se + congiuntivo to express hypothetical situations, comparisons, and ways of imagining things that are contrary to reality
• From Phone Calls to Social Media: Build practical vocabulary and expressions for telephone conversations, voicemail messages, and social networks, while learning how Italian changes depending on the medium and context
• Listening and Understanding: Develop your ability to understand spoken Italian by listening to authentic messages and conversations, including telephone messages, and practice reporting what you heard.
• Italian Media Up Close: Explore authentic Italian media and texts while discovering how Italians communicate online, including the language and expressions commonly used on Facebook and other social networks
